Salt Lake City Squirrel Situation: Hi David, I saw your article online and it was very informative. I used the search, term : remove squirrel "questions to ask" It was the first listed. We saw a squirrel come out from our gutter and we have a vaulted ceiling, no attic. That is my concern b/c you cant go up there to see if their are babies/cleanup w/o tearing down the whole ceiling! I called some local places and got standard response, no one seems concern about vaulted ceiling? What do you think? Maybe I worrying to much but I want to make sure they are all out and no animals suffer. I live in SLC, Utah. I wasn't sure where you are located but if you nearby perhaps I could hire you.I want to get someone who will do the job right and not leave the babies behind (if any). If your not available/ close by what questions I should add to the following? Questions for Removal Companies: We saw a squirrel come out from our gutter and we vaulted ceiling, no attic. Do you do inspections? What is your method for removing them? What kind of cage? price for job? per animal? What happens to the squirrel? guarantee?
Hi David, I have a garage with a overhanging roof off the back (kind of like a car port). At the top of the wall where it joins the roof, the carpentry was done very roughly, and there is a small area where squirrels have opened up some holes and nested in the rafters of the garage. I have seen the squirrels coming and going periodically, and sometimes new insulation appears on the ground below the holes. I have decided I would like to exclude them from this area, so I have installed hardware cloth over the vulnerable area (full width of the garage), and but did not the access holes they had chewed. I then covered those holes with paper - I wanted to use that as an indicator of whether they were still active in these nests (I am somewhat concerned about a nesting mother with babies...) It has been several days now, and the paper has not been disturbed. My conclusion is that it would be safe to just close up these holes and not bother with installing one way doors - my rationale is that paper is not going to stop a squirrel - probably won't even slow it down much - so they clearly are not using these entrances at this time. So, either there is nobody home, or they are using alternate entrances. In either case, closing these entrances should be ok, I am thinking. I have looked around pretty carefully, and I do not see any alternate entrances, so I am expecting just installing the hardware cloth should avoid future issues. My main question: How long should I observe the paper covering the holes before I can be confident these nests are abandoned? I put the paper up on Saturday, and it is now Wednesday, so ~4 days have passed - I'm thinking I am probably safe, but am interested in your opinion.
