Toronto Squirrel Situation: About Squirrels: Appearance, Biology, Life Cycle, Habitat, Diet, Behaviour
Squirrels are small creatures which were originally present in America, Africa, Eurasia and now they have been introduced to Australia. They are classified into three genera but nowadays they have been classified as single genus. They are found in variety of colours and in total there are 25 different types of squirrels present in the world.
Appearance and Biology
Squirrels can be found in a variety of colours and their length can be in the range of 7 inches to 11 inches. They have the ability to survive in different environments. What makes the squirrels distinctive is their striping pattern that runs down the length of their body. The fur of the squirrel is usually ranges between the colours of brown and red and this is pretty common for most of the rodents. One thing which makes squirrels unique is that they have two sets of stripe which is running from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail.
The stripes usually feature as one white stripe having black border. They have powerful hind legs and small claws which makes them ideal for climbing. They use their cheek pouches to carry food from one place to another.
There is one aspect to their behaviour which is very unique- the way they store their food inside the mouth or eat the food as a matter of fact. They make one big hoard of food which they use all the time but other squirrels create small stores of food which they use occasionally. During the winters, those who are less mobile create one big store and survive on it till spring. Those who have small stores are more active and go from one place to another.
Squirrels mate in early summer and early spring. They produce atleast 4 to 5 young ones probably twice in every year. Other squirrels mate once in a year. Once the small ones are born, they emerge from the burrow after 6 months and within two weeks, they go on their own.
Their life span is 3 to 4 years. Breeding for most of the squirrels takes place between February to April.
The diet of most of the chipmunks consists of fruit, grains and nuts. They are also capable of eating another animal and insects if need arises. They can also eat small invertebrates like slugs, snails and earthworms. Fungi and plants are also a part of their diet.
Squirrels usually live in woodlands and forests. But since they can adapt well to any kind of environment, they also move to urban areas quickly. Their burrows are quite large in size where they reside.
