West Palm Beach Squirrel Situation: Hi, I started to cut back food to my squirrels because I may be moving in the next 5 months. I just went out to fill all the 3 hanging bird feeders and the 2 cups on the wood ledge for the birds and the wood box feeder for the squirrels. But when I got to the white plastic hanging gazebo feeder, the birds and squirrels eat out of, I started to wipe out the old food with my hands. I thought it was wet from some rain but instead I immediately could feel it was a different consistency and then I smelled it. I guess the squirrels urinated in there because they are so stressed that I have been cutting back some. The pet store said for me to rotate putting food in the feeders the squirrels can get to. But I feel awful because my fingers touched quite a bit of the wet food. I took it inside and cleaned it out with gloves on and I used dishwashing soap and water to clean it out. Before I put the gloves on I used soap and water to clean my hands and then used a lot of alcohol and hydrogen peroxide to additionally clean my hands. I used 409 and clorox to sterilize the utility sink. I just hit my head last week and can't afford any more injuries or illnesses. Do you think I could have a bad reaction from having touched the urine quite a bit? I am a little nervous to wash fruits and vegetables right now. I pray I am over-reacting. If you have any advice I would really welcome it. The squirrels have always looked healthy - I have been feeding them for years. I just decided since I don't know if there is any residue in the plastic gazebo maybe I will not put food in this time. Do I need to buy a new one as there may be some tiny urine residue and I don't want it to hurt the birds I feed or do you think that since I rinsed it well with hot water that if there is any residue it will not cause a problem? Thanks so much, Kim

My response: Don't worry, you won't contract any illness from squirrel urine - I've touched and eaten it many times with no problems!
